From the mighty Atlantic Ocean to the black water rivers, with countless miles of tidal creeks, rivers and sounds, Beaufort County is a boater’s paradise. The power boater can put his/her boat in the water anywhere in the county, thanks to the numerous free boat landings. And the sailor can count on the wind most of the time. Since Beaufort is on the Intracoastal Waterway, many a “snowbird” yacht stops en route to northern or southern waters.
A word about tides and boating safety is in order. Beaufort County tides can reach levels of 10 feet or more, creating potential hazards for the unwary mariner. They create fast currents and will expose unseen oyster rakes, mud flats and sandbars. New waters should be explored for the first time around low water when hazards and channels are visible. Local tide charts are readily available from merchants in the area. All vessels should be properly equipped with life preservers and other safety equipment.

With the Intracoastal Waterway cutting through Beaufort County, some visitors arrive by boat looking for an anchorage. There are safe harbors for those who just wish to drop anchor, but sailors should remember that Beaufort depths can range ten feet between high and low tides.
