Hunting is a time-honored tradition in the lowcountry. The big-game hunter is blessed with one of the longest deer seasons in the nation beginning in August and ending in December. Other targets include wild hogs, turkey, rabbits and squirrels. Duck hunting is another tradition, with good puddle duck populations in the rivers feeding the salt marsh.
Public access to hunting land is somewhat limited but there are many large tracts, which can be hunted by joining a club or obtaining a lease. Bear Island, (843) 844-8957, in the ACE has some public hunting. For information on obtaining a license, call (843) 762-5078.
