Ocean kayaking has become very popular in the tidal areas leading into St. Helena and Port Royal sounds. Kayaks and canoes are perfect for the blackwater rivers of the ACE Basin, a large estuary that lies between Beaufort and Charleston and is fed by the Ashepoo, Combahee and Edisto rivers. Once the home of huge rice plantations, much of the ACE has returned to nature. The best way to see the unbelievable variety of rare birds and wild animals is on a paddling trip down one of the tidal rivers.
