The Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort, located just north of the city on U.S. Highway 21, also provides group tours on request. A few other events, such as an air show held every other year, also are open to the public.
MCAS was once home to several plantations. During the Revolutionary War, the British landed at what is now the Laurel Bay military housing area and battled American troops at Gray’s Hill.
Locally, MCAS pilots perform air shows. They provide volunteers for numerous community events, supporting the local Adopt-a-School program, the Greater Beaufort Chamber of Commerce Family Fun Day in May, the Beaufort Water Festival in July, the Beaufort Shrimp Festival in October, and the Beaufort Veteran’s Day ceremony in November.
