Another arm of Beaufort’s tri-command is the Naval Hospital, which serves the active and retired military in the Beaufort area, plus their dependents. The hospital was recently ranked No. 1 in customer satisfaction among all Naval hospitals serving Marine Corps bases. The hospital grounds are worth a visit to see what is believed to be the oldest tabby (cement-like building material made from oyster shell, lime and sand) structure in South Carolina.
The Fort Frederick Heritage Preserve is a three-acre property on the Beaufort River that contains the remains of a tabby fort built by the British in 1735 to protect them from the Spanish in St. Augustine, and the French and Indians.
Directly behind the Naval Hospital are beautiful grounds on Port Royal Sound with picnic tables and a playground for children.
