Don't let the drowsy, small-town ambiance of Beaufort deceive you. When the sun sets, the good times begin along the waterfront, just as they did back in 1844 when liquor houses, bowling alleys and billiard halls dotted Bay Street.
Over at the Beaufort Inn on Port Republic Street, the Grill Room-Wine Bar starts to fill up when it opens at 5:00 p.m. They have 30 excellent wines by the glass and wine tasters can choose flights of wine such as three chardonnays or three cabernets. Nibblers sample from a tray of exotic cheeses or can select hors doeuvres, desserts or full dinners from the dining room menu. The Grill closes at 11:00 p.m and seating is on a walk-in basis.
On historic Bay Street, you can always find a party at Ollies by the Bay, which offers live entertainment several nights a week. If youre on Ollies patio on a Friday or Saturday, check out some of the lowcountrys favorite bands performing live.
Only a couple of doors away is a local favorite, Plums. With its vast selection of beers and marvelous views of Waterfront Park and the Beaufort River, Plums converts into a happening bar at 10:00 p.m.
If you need a little sustenance during your night on the town, hop next door to Luthers Rare and Well Done. Luthers has a late-night menu and late-night parties on Fridays and Saturdays with live music from cover bands and the areas best rock-n-roll. The atmosphere is casual and the view from the porch is great.
Skip down a couple doors to Hemingways Bistro, a cozy and quaint bar thats a great place to drop in for a drink and for live music on the weekend. This is a perfect nightspot for those wanting to check out the local scene.
If youre in the mood for something more mellow, cross over to West Street to Bistro 205. With a fantastic wine selection and live jazz every Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, this venue has a European, slightly more sophisticated aura than the Bay Street scene.
For something ethnic, stop by the Jamaican Pepperpot on Boundary Street. Amidst authentic Jamaican atmosphere, there is reggae on Tuesdays and Saturdays.
On Ladys Island, try the Steamer Pub, an extension of the Steamer restaurant that has live music on weekends and karaoke on Wednesdays. The Steamer has a casual seafood restaurant atmosphere and a rocking crowd.
All year-round there are special events, concerts and performances at Waterfront Park. For specifics, pick up a free copy of Lowcountry Weekly at any newsstand area or call the Greater Beaufort Chamber of Commerce at (843) 524-3163.
