6/5/02 Milton's Comus Performance
Wednesday, June 5 2002 John Milton is best known for his monumental epic, Paradise Lost, but as a young man he wrote A Mask (what is often called by the name of its villain Comus)–a charming musical morality play reminiscent of Shakespeare’s The Tempest and Midsummer Night’s Dream. The Seventh International Milton Symposium, on-line as www.bol3.com/ims7, will sponsor a performance of the masque in Beaufort on June 5th, 6th, and 7th, 2002, starring performers from the Royal Shakespeare Company and featuring an original musical score composed for this presentation. The masque features a Lady who just says no to the temptations of a wickedly attractive Bacchus-type, Comus. The Lady is saved by her own will-power, with the help of a river nymph, Sabrina, whose business it is to save virgins in distress. This production should prove that evil can be overcome and that chastity can be sexy. Location: Beaufort
