By Road
Ground traffic enters and exits Beaufort via US Route 21 to the north or SC Route 170 to the southwest.
By Air
Beaufort has a small airport named Frogmore International Airport. The 3,430-foot runway serves private, corporate and cargo planes. Commercial air travelers typically use Savannah or Charleston airports for scheduled flights. Rental cars are available. Savannah is about a 45-minute drive, and Charleston is 65 miles away, an easy hour and a half drive. US Airways Express flies between Hilton Head Airport and Charlotte, N.C., which is a US Air hub.
By Rail
An Amtrak train (1-800-usa-rail) passes through Yemassee, a tiny town about 25 miles north of Beaufort. One north-bound and one southbound train stop at Yemassee each day. The northbound train arrives (and departs) the quaint station at 7:09 p.m. headed for New York City. It reaches Washington D.C. at 5:45 a.m., so a journey to the nation’s capital or to points north is a nice overnight trip. The train, which also stops at Savannah and Charleston, has sleeper cars.
By Bus
Greyhound Buses stop at Beaufort’s Boundary Street station nine times a day, with four buses headed north, three headed south, and two traveling toward Columbia. Buses usually stop at Parris Island except during periods of heightened security. Greyhound telephone numbers are (843) 524-4646 for local information and (800) 231-2222 for fare and schedule information.
