The cost of building your own home starts around $115-$130 per square foot for a custom, higher-end home, and from $140-$145 a square foot for a luxury home. Builders say once you get your building plans, the time frame is approximately one month to get permitting arranged and six to seven months to complete the house. A standard home is less, about $120-$130 per square foot. An economical 1,500-square-foot home with vinyl siding, screened porch and a garage might cost $130,000, not including the lot.
Generally, houses are built on piers or foundation walls, with a crawl space underneath. Although building on a cement slab may be less expensive, a raised house looks better and works better, say the contractors. Architects have found that the big surprise to newcomers is the fact that porches cost money. Porches, designed for enjoying the view, are an absolute must-have on any Beaufort house. They cost a little bit less than half the price of heated space, and can be used almost year-round.
